Man found guilty of sexually assaulting women in E11ens, Chippenham

A man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting women at a Chippenham nightclub three years ago.

Alexandru Popescu, 30, of Bradford Leigh, near Holt, was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault following a five-day trial at Swindon Crown Court on June 4.

On April 2, 2022, Popescu followed a woman around the E11evn nightclub, Chippenham, during a night out. He danced behind her, grabbing her without her consent and pulling her against him. He then went on to grab another woman's breast and held it before she managed to move away and her boyfriend intervened. Security then ejected Popescu from the club.

DC Niall Maidment said, "I would like to thank the victims in this case for their bravery and courage for reporting the offences and for seeing this case through the courts. The case was adjourned on several occasions due to court delays, resulting in a three-year delay.

"I’m pleased that the jury found Popescu guilty and will now rightly hold him to account for his predatory behaviour.

“I’d also like to reassure victims of sexual assault that they will always be listened to – no one has the right to violate another person, and we are committed to ensuring survivors are supported and heard.”

Popescu was released on bail and is due to be sentenced on July 15 at Swindon Crown Court.
