Reminder to dog walkers to prevent livestock worrying incidents

Hi Resident,

PC Howick, of the Wiltshire Rural Crime Team, has shared tips for dog owners to prevent further cases of livestock worrying in a recent video shared to Wiltshire Police's official social media accounts and YouTube channel. This comes after an increase in reports of livestock worrying across Wiltshire in recent weeks. PC Howick said:

“We are asking the public, when out enjoying the countryside, that you are vigilant and respectful of sheep in fields.

To avoid any unnecessary loss to livestock and the potential outcome that, as a dog owner, you commit a criminal offence, check the field before you enter, keep your dogs on leads and keep them under control at all times.”

Wiltshire Police offer the following advice to dog owners:

🐕‍🦺 Keep your dog on a lead, even if you cannot see livestock. It is best to keep your dog on a short lead when you are closer to livestock

🐕‍🦺 Always ensure you have good control of your dog

🐕‍🦺 Plan ahead and bring dog treats with you to help ensure your dog is focused on your commands

🐕‍🦺 Look out for signage about livestock, and always adhere to what the signs say

🐕‍🦺 Always stick to designated footpaths and byways, and never tamper with fencing or trespass on to private land

🐕‍🦺 Ensure you clear up after your dog, as faeces can cause harm to livestock

If you witness a dog chasing or attacking livestock, immediately call 999. For more information about livestock worrying, please visit the Wiltshire Police website.
